Michael C. Hashem
Michael C. Hashem became the permanent Superintendent of the Saugus Public Schools in November 2023, after running the district as acting superintendent first. A former Saugus High School principal, he leads about 2,600 students through a district that recently rebuilt itself, folding its grades into a new combined Middle-High School alongside modern elementary schools. The Superintendent is hired by the School Committee and reports to it.

The School Committee
Saugus elects five School Committee members at large. The Committee sets district policy, writes the school budget request that goes to Town Meeting, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent, and its members choose one of their own as Chair.
Because the seats are filled at the town election every odd-numbered November, the membership turns over from one election to the next. For the current roster, the meeting schedule, and contact details, go directly to the district’s School Committee page.

Meetings & Participation
- When: the Committee meets on a published schedule, with agendas posted on the district site and the town Agenda Center.
- Public comment: residents may address the Committee, so check the agenda for how to sign up.
- Budget: the Committee’s request has to be funded by Town Meeting each spring.
- Subcommittees: the detailed work on finance, policy, and facilities happens in subcommittee first.

Your schools
School Committee. Start times, the school calendar, bus routes and stops, the phone policy, athletics and activity fees, and anything in the student handbook. It sets district policy, and the total size of the school budget is voted by Town Meeting, or by your Mayor and Council in a city.
