Boards & Commissions

What Boards & Commissions Are

Beyond the Selectmen, the Town Manager, and Town Meeting, much of Saugus’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions — reviewing development, hearing zoning appeals, protecting historic and natural resources, and advising on aging, recreation, and accessibility. They are where residents have the most direct hand in shaping the town.

The Town Manager nominates most members and the Board of Selectmen approves them; members serve fixed terms. Meetings are public, and many boards have openings.

Key Boards & Commissions

  • Planning Board — reviews subdivisions, site plans, and development.
  • Board of Appeals (Zoning) — hears variances and special permits.
  • Board of Assessors — oversees property valuation and assessment.
  • Board of Health — protects public health and the environment.
  • Conservation Commission — protects wetlands and natural resources.
  • Historical Commission — preserves Saugus’s historic character.
  • Council on Aging — guides services for older residents.
  • Youth & Recreation Commission — oversees recreation programs.
  • Commission on Disabilities — advances accessibility and rights.

How to Serve

  1. Find an opening on the town’s boards and commissions page.
  2. Submit an application or letter of interest to the Town Manager’s office.
  3. Interview if requested, and await appointment — most seats are nominated by the Manager and approved by the Selectmen.
  4. Serve — attend public meetings and help make decisions for your town.

Serving on a board is one of the most direct ways to shape Saugus.
