Who We Are

About Massachusetts Civics Online

Empowering Massachusetts students to engage, lead, and shape their communities through real-world civics education.

Our Mission

Massachusetts Civics Online is a nonpartisan resource designed to help high school students complete their Civic Action Projects required in Massachusetts public schools.

Developed by a former executive of Boston’s State House News Service, the project was created to strengthen civic engagement across the Commonwealth and to support Massachusetts’ statewide requirement for student-led civic action.

We connect students to the tools and real-world pathways they need to engage meaningfully with their communities and their government.

What We Provide

  • Multilingual access to America’s founding documents
  • Step-by-step action guides, including FOIA templates and media outreach resources
  • Guides for voter registration, public service, and leadership pathways
  • Independent-thinking and media-literacy tools for navigating today’s information landscape

Our Vision

We aim to empower a new generation of leaders: students who are informed, confident, and ready to make a lasting difference, starting right in their own communities.

Our Editions

Beyond our statewide guide, we publish a community edition for every one of the 351 cities and towns in Massachusetts, each built on the statewide foundation. Some communities also have a printable Civics Pocket Guide. You’ll find the full collection on our Communities page.
