Finding the Right Department
Most of what residents need from the town runs through a department, not an elected official: paying a bill, pulling a permit, reporting a problem, registering to vote. Since January 2025 the appointment of every one of these department heads has belonged to the Town Manager under section 4 of Chapter 405 of the Acts of 2024, on merit and fitness alone, which is why none of their names appears on a ballot and why the Town Manager is the person the Select Board holds responsible for all of them. Four of them work differently: the police chief, the fire chief, the public works director and the assistant town manager are the Town Manager’s appointments, but they take effect only when a majority of the Select Board ratifies them.

Emergencies are 911. Holliston publishes no single combined non-emergency line: the Police business line is 508-429-1212 and the Fire Department’s is 508-429-4631. After 3:30 pm a highway emergency goes to the Police number, and after hours a water emergency goes to the Fire number, which reaches the water crew on call.
