Town Government
Holliston School Committee & Superintendent
The Superintendent
Dr. J. Kimo Carter
About 2,651 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Dr. J. Kimo Carter leads Holliston Public Schools, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running four schools day to day. He started on July 1, 2026, after a search the School Committee ran with an outside firm, and his first letter to the community called it Day 1. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates him against goals it publishes and votes on. Note what this means for the money: the school budget is the one large piece of town spending the Town Manager does not build. It comes from the Superintendent to the School Committee, and then to the same Town Meeting that votes everything else.

The School Committee
The Holliston School Committee has seven members, all elected town-wide to staggered three-year terms. Holliston is a single-town district, so all seven answer to Holliston voters and nobody else. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. Meetings are generally held on Thursday evenings at 7:00 pm during the school year, and they are public, which means a Holliston student who shows up can speak.

The committee posts its own roster, its meeting calendar and its agendas at holliston.k12.ma.us. Seats can also change between elections: two were filled in June 2026, and the first of them was settled on June 8 by a joint roll call vote of the School Committee and the three Select Board members sitting together, which is how a town committee seat is filled mid-term.
The District at a Glance

A Building Project You Can Watch From the Start
Annual Town Meeting voted Article 25 on May 11, 2026 to fund a high school construction feasibility study, and the Holliston School Building Committee held its first meeting on July 21, 2026. The town is working toward Massachusetts School Building Authority funding, which is why the committee has to keep the project inside state rules from the first day. Its chair is Barbara Agen Ryan. The Select Board’s Ben Sparrell and the School Committee’s Frank Ogura sit on it as voting members, alongside four residents; the Superintendent, the Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations, the High School Principal, the Facilities Director and the Town Manager sit on it without a vote.
If you are in the Holliston schools now, this is the rare civic process whose whole arc you can follow, and the committee publishes an email address for questions from anyone in town.

Curious how a bill becomes law, or how students can take on a civics project?
