Boards & Commissions
What Boards & Commissions Are
Beyond the Council and School Committee, much of Worcester’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions — approving development, hearing zoning appeals, protecting historic resources, and advising on parks, licensing, and human rights. They are where residents have the most direct hand in shaping the city.
Most members are appointed by the City Manager, some subject to Council confirmation, and serve fixed terms. Meetings are public, and many boards have openings.
Key Boards & Commissions
- Planning Board — reviews subdivisions, site plans, and major development.
- Zoning Board of Appeals — hears variances and special permits.
- Historical Commission — oversees changes to historic resources and districts.
- License Commission — regulates liquor, entertainment, and other licenses.
- Conservation Commission — protects wetlands and natural resources.
- Human Rights Commission — promotes equity and civil rights.
