Finding the Right Department
Most of what residents need from the town runs through a department, not an elected official: paying a bill, pulling a permit, reporting a problem, registering to vote. Almost every department head below was appointed by the Town Manager under section 7 of the town’s governing act, on merit and fitness alone, which is why none of their names appears on a ballot and why the Town Manager is the person the Select Board holds responsible for all of them. Four are appointed a little differently, and the act names them: the police chief, the fire chief, the finance director and the town clerk are appointed by the Town Manager and then confirmed by the Select Board.
