Spencer Does Not Run Its Own Schools
This is the first thing to understand about education in Spencer, and it changes where you push. Spencer and East Brookfield share one school system, the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District, and it is governed by a single regional School Committee that answers to both towns at once. So the budget for your school is not written by the Board of Selectmen, and the people who set school policy are not the people who set town policy. Every enrollment figure, spending figure and state score on this site is the DISTRICT’s, covering both towns together, because that is the only level at which the state measures it.

About 1,443 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Paul S. Haughey leads the Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running four schools day to day. The district describes the job in its own words: the Superintendent is responsible for improving student learning, obtaining and developing quality staff, securing and managing funds and facilities, and keeping communication open between the schools and the public. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates that work. Because the district is regional, the Superintendent answers to a committee drawn from two towns.

The School Committee
The Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School Committee has seven members serving staggered three year terms, five of them elected by Spencer voters and two by East Brookfield voters. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It meets at the district office at 306 Main Street, and the meetings are public, which means a Spencer student who shows up can speak. The committee is a member of the Massachusetts Association of School Committees.

How a Spencer Seat Is Filled
Spencer’s School Committee seats are on the town ballot, not the district’s, and they show up as their own race. At the annual town election on May 12, 2026, the Spencer seat was won on write-in votes alone: Melissa Martiros took it with 108, out of 1,536 ballots cast. That is the whole distance between a Spencer resident and a seat that helps set the budget for four schools, and it is worth knowing before the next town election.
