Who Represents Spencer
Spencer is split between two state representative districts, so this is one of the towns where your own address decides who speaks for you on Beacon Hill. One state senator and one member of Congress cover the whole town, and the Commonwealth’s two U.S. senators represent the entire state, Spencer included. Six names on this page, five for any single address, and between them they cover everything from a state road project to a federal farm bill.
State Senator
Worcester and Hampshire District · Republican
Peter J. Durant
Email: peter.durant@masenate.gov
All of Spencer sits inside the Worcester and Hampshire district, so there is no line to check before you write. Senator Durant sits on the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government, which is the committee that handles the state laws towns like Spencer run on, and he came to the Senate in a 2023 special election after more than a decade in the Massachusetts House.
State Representative
Spencer is split between two House districts, so the person who speaks for your street depends on where in town you live. Check your address before you write, because a letter to the wrong one of these two will simply be forwarded.
5th Worcester District · Republican
Donald R. Berthiaume, Jr.
State House: Room 548 · (617) 722-2488
Email: donald.berthiaume@mahouse.gov
6th Worcester District · Republican
John J. Marsi
State House: Room 156 · (617) 722-2240
Email: john.marsi@mahouse.gov
Representative Berthiaume served on the Spencer Board of Selectmen before he went to Beacon Hill, which is a route worth noticing: the seat you can win at 18 in your own town is the same ladder. Representative Marsi sits on the House Committee on Ways and Means and the Joint Committee on Education. A state representative files bills, votes the state budget, and can chase a state agency on a constituent’s behalf, which is often the fastest use of the office. Both of these offices take calls from Spencer residents.
In Washington
All of Spencer sits in the 1st Congressional District, which reaches from the Berkshire hills across Springfield and Chicopee to Spencer. Massachusetts is represented in the U.S. Senate by Elizabeth Warren, the senior senator, and Edward J. Markey, the junior senator, both Democrats.
1st Congressional District · Democrat
Richard E. Neal
Washington: 372 Cannon House Office Building · 202-225-5601
Representative Neal is the ranking member of the House Committee on Ways and Means, which he chaired from 2019 to 2023, so the committee that writes federal tax law is one a Spencer resident can reach through their own member.
