Spencer Board of Selectmen
About the Board
The Board of Selectmen is elected town-wide, so every Spencer voter helps choose all five, and each serves a three year term on a staggered schedule that puts a couple of seats on the ballot each spring. The board sets town policy, signs the warrants that decide what Town Meeting gets to vote on, appoints residents to many town boards, and hires and supervises the Town Administrator who runs the town day to day. It also issues the licenses that let a business sell alcohol, run entertainment, or hold a road race. When a daily problem becomes town policy, this is the room where it happens.

- Hires the Town Administrator and holds the Administrator accountable.
- Controls the warrant, deciding what business reaches Town Meeting for a vote.
- Grants licenses for alcohol, entertainment, lodging, junk dealing and more, which is why local businesses appear on its agenda so often.
Board Members
All five members are elected town-wide. After each annual town election the board reorganizes and votes for its own officers. At the reorganization on May 18, 2026, six days after the town election, the board voted unanimously to seat Gary Woodbury as Chairman, Jonathan Viner as Vice Chairman and Christopher Woodbury as Clerk. Those minutes were approved on June 1, 2026.

What the 2026 Ballot Decided
Two of the five seats were on the ballot at the annual town election of May 12, 2026, and four candidates ran for them. The Town Clerk’s certified results:

The gap between the second seat and the third was 36 votes, out of 1,536 ballots cast. In a town election of this size, a single conversation on a single street is a real quantity of votes.
Meetings & How to Participate
- When: on Mondays, typically twice a month. The town posts each agenda in advance with the meeting location on it.
- Agendas & minutes: posted on the town website at spencerma.gov, with minutes approved at a later meeting and posted alongside.
- Public comment: the board’s agenda carries a Citizens Input item, and residents may address the board there.
- Town Meeting: for the budget and bylaws, the deciding vote belongs to the registered voters in the hall, which can include you.
