City Leadership

The Fitchburg Mayor’s Office

In Fitchburg, one person sits at the top of city government, and you put them there. The Mayor is the elected, full-time chief executive: the official who runs every department, writes the annual budget, appoints the city’s officials, and carries out the ordinances the Council passes. There is no appointed manager standing between the Mayor and the work. That means the buck stops at a desk you can find, held by someone who has to face the voters to keep the job.

The Mayor

Mayor Samantha M. Squailia

Samantha “Sam” Squailia

Samantha “Sam” Squailia is serving her second term as Mayor of Fitchburg. A lifelong resident, she first won the office on November 7, 2023 and was sworn in January 2, 2024 as the city’s 46th Mayor and only the third woman ever to hold it, then earned a second term in November 2025. Before that she spent six years on the City Council as a Councilor-at-Large, first elected in 2017. By training she is an architectural building engineer and a LEED Accredited Professional, and as Mayor she has put her weight behind road repair, infrastructure, and a City Hall that is easier for residents to reach.
