Boards & Commissions
What Boards & Commissions Are
Beyond the Council and School Committee, much of Fitchburg’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions, approving development, hearing zoning appeals, protecting historic resources, and advising on public health, licensing, and human rights. They are where residents have the most direct hand in shaping the city.
Most members are appointed by the Mayor, often with City Council confirmation, and serve fixed terms. Meetings are public, and many boards have openings.

- Historical Commission — helps protect Fitchburg’s historic and architectural resources.
- License Commission — regulates liquor, entertainment, and other licenses.
- Board of Health — oversees public-health regulations and inspections.
