The Superintendent
Dr. Almudena (Almi) G. Abeyta
Dr. Almudena (Almi) G. Abeyta became Chelsea’s Superintendent in 2020, making her the first Latina to lead the district. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Journalism from the University of New Mexico plus two master’s degrees and a doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Under her leadership, guided by the 2021-2026 strategic plan “Bridge to Success”, Chelsea Public Schools has gained national attention for improving literacy and outcomes for multilingual learners. In 2025, Dr. Abeyta was named the inaugural Ignite Reading Torchbearer Award recipient, recognizing her impact on early reading success across the district.

The School Committee
The Chelsea School Committee sets policy for the public schools, adopts the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It has nine seats: one member elected at-large and eight members elected by district, all serving two-year terms. Much of its detailed work happens in subcommittees covering policy, curriculum, personnel, athletics, and buildings & grounds.
