The Superintendent
Dr. Almudena “Almi” G. Abeyta
Dr. Almudena “Almi” G. Abeyta became Chelsea’s Superintendent in January 2020. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Communication and Journalism from the University of New Mexico plus two master’s degrees and a doctorate from the Harvard Graduate School of Education. Her work for educational equity has earned national recognition, including the inaugural Latina Administrator of the Year Award from the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents in 2015 and the inaugural La Lucha Award from Latinos for Education in 2021.

The School Committee
The Chelsea School Committee sets policy for the public schools, adopts the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It has nine seats: one member elected at-large and eight members elected by district, all serving two-year terms.

The District at a Glance
- Enrollment: ~5,749 students (PreK-12), one of the most diverse districts in Massachusetts
- Schools: 11 total, 4 elementary, 3 middle, 1 high school, plus early learning and alternative programs

What this seat decides
Your schools
School Committee. Start times, the school calendar, bus routes and stops, the phone policy, athletics and activity fees, and the policies in the student handbook. It sets district policy, and the total size of the school budget is voted by the City Council.
Your principal and your superintendent. The principal for how a school rule works day to day in your building. The superintendent for how the whole district runs. The School Committee selects the superintendent, and the superintendent appoints the principals, so a question about any other staff member goes to the district, not to the board.
