Town Government
Braintree Town Council
About the Council
When Braintree gave up town meeting in 2008, the Town Council became the body that holds the lawmaking power once spread across every voter in the room. The Council has nine members: six elected by district, one from each part of town, and three elected at large by the whole town. Councilors serve two-year terms, short enough that a single bad year on the job can end a career. The Council is where a daily problem becomes town policy: a flooded street that needs fixing, a stalled development, the tax rate on your family’s home.
- Sets policy and law by passing ordinances and resolutions.
- Controls the budget by approving or cutting what the Mayor proposes, and by setting the tax rate.
- Checks the Mayor by reviewing appointments and holding the administration to account in public session.
Council Members
Three councilors are elected at large by every Braintree voter. The other six each represent a single district. The Council elects one of its members as President to run its meetings, currently Peter J. Morin of District 6, with Elizabeth Maglio of District 3 as Vice-President.
