Abington School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Felicia Moschella, Ph.D.

About 2,132 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Felicia Moschella leads Abington Public Schools from the Charles M. Frolio building at 1071 Washington Street, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running five schools day to day. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates the office against goals it publishes and votes on. Note what this means for the money: the school budget is the one large piece of town spending the Town Manager does not build. It comes from the Superintendent to the School Committee, and then to the same Town Meeting that votes everything else.

The School Committee

Charter section 3-5 sets the Abington School Committee at five members, elected town-wide to staggered three-year terms. Abington is a single-town district, so all five answer to Abington voters and nobody else. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It publishes its own officers, and it titles them Committee Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary. Meetings are held monthly on Tuesday evenings during the school year in the Library and Media Center at the Middle and High School, and they are public, which means an Abington student who shows up can speak.

Curious how a bill becomes law, or how students can take on a civics project?
