School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Joseph Bergeron

About 1,156 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Joseph Bergeron is the Superintendent of the Mount Greylock Regional School District, which Williamstown shares with the neighboring town of Lanesborough, and he came up through the district as its finance director and then its assistant superintendent before the School Committee named him permanent superintendent. He proposes the school budget, sets academic priorities, and runs the district’s three schools day to day. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates him against goals it publishes and votes on. Note what this means for the money: the school budget is the one large piece of town spending the Town Manager does not build. It comes from the Superintendent to the School Committee, and then, as a regional assessment, to the Town Meetings of both member towns.

The School Committee

The Mount Greylock Regional School Committee has seven members serving staggered three-year terms, and because the district is regional the seats are split between its two towns: four are elected by Williamstown voters and three by Lanesborough voters. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It publishes its own officers, with Julia Bowen of Williamstown as Chair and Christina Conry of Lanesborough as Vice Chair. Meetings are held through the school year, are public, and are streamed, which means a Williamstown student who shows up can speak.
