Town Government
Williamstown Boards & Commissions
What Boards & Commissions Are
Beyond the Select Board and the School Committee, much of Williamstown’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions. They approve new development, hear zoning appeals, protect the town’s wetlands and open space, weigh in on historic places, and guide services for residents. They are the rooms where an ordinary resident can have the most direct hand in a decision.
Who appoints them is a real question here, and Williamstown answers it in three places, which is unusual. The Town Manager appoints the Board of Assessors, the Board of Health, the Conservation Commission and the Council on Aging board. The Select Board appoints bodies of its own, including the Community Preservation Committee, the Affordable Housing Trust, the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Board of Registrars. And the Town Moderator appoints the Finance Committee. A handful of bodies are not appointed at all: the Select Board, the Planning Board, the Library Trustees and the Housing Authority are elected by Williamstown voters, and the Mount Greylock Regional School Committee is elected by the voters of Williamstown and Lanesborough together.

How to Serve
- Find an opening on the town’s boards and committees page.
- Submit a letter of interest or application to the Select Board office. The board advertises its openings on the town website and on social media, and it takes applications up to a stated meeting date.
- Interview if asked, and await appointment.
- Serve: attend the public meetings and help make decisions for your town.
Here is the part worth knowing before you turn eighteen. Many of these seats are filled by residents who simply applied, not by people with any title. A letter of interest to the Select Board office, or to the Town Manager for the boards the manager appoints, is often all it takes to be considered when a seat opens.
Serving on a board is one of the most direct ways to shape Williamstown.
