The Mayor
Domenic J. Sarno
Domenic J. Sarno is a native of Springfield and the longest-serving mayor in the city’s history. A graduate of the High School of Commerce and Westfield State University (B.A.), Sarno built his public service career as a four-term City Councilor, including a term as Council President, before serving as Executive Director of the South End Community Center from 2002 to 2007. First elected Mayor on November 6, 2007, he has won reelection in 2009, 2011, 2015, 2019, and 2023, and is now serving his historic sixth term. Under his administration Springfield has invested nearly $1 billion in new school construction, attracted MGM Springfield (which opened in 2018), led the city’s recovery after the devastating June 2011 tornado, and driven downtown revitalization including arts, entertainment, and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Mayor Sarno and his wife Carla are the parents of two daughters, Cassandra and Chiara.

What the Mayor Does
As Springfield’s chief executive under the mayor-council form of government, the Mayor holds broad executive authority.
- Executive authority: Enforces all city ordinances and laws; oversees all municipal operations and city departments.
- Appointments: Appoints most department heads, board members, and key staff, subject to City Council confirmation where required.
- Budget: Prepares and submits the annual city budget to the City Council for review and approval.
- Veto power: May veto City Council ordinances; the Council can override with a supermajority vote.
- School Committee: Serves as ex officio Chairman of the seven-member Springfield School Committee.
- Emergency authority: Has authority to declare local emergencies and coordinate city responses.
The Administration
The Mayor leads a full municipal administration including a City Solicitor, Cabinet department heads, and a constituent services officer who manages the Springfield Flex Squad, a rapid-response team for neighborhood quality-of-life issues.
- City Solicitor: Legal counsel to the Mayor and all city departments; reviews contracts and ordinances.
- Chief Development Officer: Leads economic development, planning, and major project coordination.
- Department heads: Appointed by the Mayor; manage Finance, Police, Fire, DPW, Health & Human Services, Housing, Parks, and other departments.
