Rockland School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Jane Hackett

About 2,124 students start their day in Rockland’s four schools, and one person answers for all of it. Jane Hackett leads Rockland Public Schools, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running the district day to day. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates her work. Because Rockland runs its own single-town district, that committee is elected by Rockland voters alone, which is a shorter line between a student’s classroom and a ballot than most Massachusetts towns have.

The School Committee

The Rockland School Committee has five members serving staggered three-year terms, elected town-wide alongside every other town office in April. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent who runs the schools day to day. After each annual election it reorganizes and elects its own Chair, Vice Chair and Secretary, and the vote is taken in open session where anyone can watch it happen.

Curious how a bill becomes law, or how students can take on a civics project?
