City Government
Boards & Commissions
What Boards & Commissions Are
Beyond the Council and the School Committee, a lot of Newton’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions. They approve new buildings, hear zoning appeals, protect wetlands and historic places, and advise on parks, licensing, and the arts. These are the rooms where an ordinary resident has the most direct hand in shaping the city.
Most members are appointed by the Mayor, many subject to City Council confirmation, and serve fixed terms. Meetings are public, and seats open up regularly.
