Hanover School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Matthew A. Ferron

About 2,415 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Matthew A. Ferron leads Hanover Public Schools, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running four schools day to day: Cedar Elementary, Center Elementary, Hanover Middle and Hanover High. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates him against goals it publishes and votes on. Note what this means for the money. The Town Manager Act requires the Town Manager to submit a balanced budget for the whole town including the schools, and requires the School Committee to hand him its figures, but the same act keeps the schools out of his day-to-day supervision and leaves the committee’s statutory responsibilities untouched. So the school budget is built here, folded into the town budget there, and voted in the room where every registered voter can stand up.

The School Committee

The Hanover School Committee has five members, all elected town-wide to staggered three-year terms. Hanover is a single-town district, so all five answer to Hanover voters and nobody else. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It publishes its own officer titles, and Hanover’s second seat is Vice Chair. Meetings are held at Hanover High School in the Media Center at 7:00 PM as posted, and they are public, which means a Hanover student who shows up can speak.
