Registered Voters
Massachusetts publishes voter-registration counts by town through the Secretary of the Commonwealth. As in most of the state, Hanover’s largest bloc by far is voters who choose no party at all, which is worth knowing before anyone tells you how this town votes.
- Total registered: 12,116
- Unenrolled (no party): 8,484 (70.02%)
- Democrats: 1,964 (16.21%)
- Republicans: 1,565 (12.92%)
- Political designations: 103 (0.85%)
Registration is one number and turnout is another. At the Annual Town Election on May 16, 2026, 1,254 Hanover voters cast a ballot out of 12,078 registered, a turnout of 10.38 percent across four precincts. Those 1,254 ballots filled the Select Board, the School Committee, the Board of Assessors, the Board of Health, the Planning Board, a Library Trustee seat and the Moderator’s chair, and approved a debt exclusion for a new vocational high school. One voter in ten decided all of that for the whole town, which tells you what a single ballot is worth in a town election. The year before, 5,252 voters came out for the same May election, so the number moves.
