About 2,397 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Cliff Chuang leads Bedford Public Schools, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running four schools day to day from the office at 97 McMahon Road. The Superintendent is hired by and evaluated by the elected School Committee, and you can see the contract in the record: on April 6, 2026 the committee voted unanimously to renew his for three years, from July 1, 2026 through June 30, 2029. Note what this means for the money. The school budget is the one large piece of town spending the Town Manager does not build. It comes from the Superintendent to the School Committee, and then to the same Town Meeting that votes everything else.

The School Committee
The Bedford School Committee has five voting members, all elected town-wide to staggered three-year terms under charter section 4-1. Bedford is a single-town district, so all five answer to Bedford voters and nobody else. The committee appoints and evaluates the Superintendent, reviews and approves the school budget, and sets educational goals and policy. Three more seats sit at the table without a vote: a Bedford High School senior appointed for one year as Student Representative, and, since January 2022, one representative each from Hanscom Air Force Base and from METCO, added so that both of those communities of Bedford students have a voice in the room.

Bedford voters also elect two members of the Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical School District Committee, which governs the regional high school Bedford students can choose instead. Those two seats are held by Sarah Harper Dorer and Brian C. O’Donnell.
