The 150 acres of woods and old field at the Rice Nature Preserve are open to you because of one show of hands. In early May 2005 Wilbraham’s voters filled a Town Meeting and voted, nearly unanimously, to buy the Rice farm rather than watch it become house lots, and they paid for it with a property tax surcharge they had already voted onto themselves at the ballot box. That is the whole machine in one move, and it still runs the same way. On Monday, May 11, 2026, 334 registered voters walked into the auditorium at Minnechaug Regional High School and voted a $57,018,471 town budget for the year, from 6:32 in the evening until 9:23. Five days later, 880 voters filled eight town offices, one of them a five year Planning Board seat that came down to 26 votes. This guide shows you how to get into both rooms.

- County: Hampden. Wilbraham covers 22.044 square miles of the hill country east of Springfield, at about 663 residents to the square mile. Hampden, the town on its southern border, was Wilbraham’s own South Parish until 1878, and the two still share one school district.
- Government: open Town Meeting, with an elected three member Select Board that also sits as the Board of Health, and an appointed Town Administrator, Nick Breault.
- Schools: the Hampden-Wilbraham Regional School District, about 2,836 students across six schools, led by Superintendent John A. Provost, Ed.D.
How Wilbraham’s Government Works
Wilbraham runs on an open Town Meeting, which means there are no elected Town Meeting members at all: every registered voter in Wilbraham is a member, and any of them can walk in, speak, and vote on the budget. Voters also elect a 3 member Select Board to set policy between meetings and the School Committee that oversees the schools. The Select Board hires a professional Town Administrator to run the town day to day. So the money is voted by whoever shows up, the direction is set by the Select Board, and the daily work is carried out by the Town Administrator.
Town Meeting
The legislative body, and it is not a committee. Every registered voter in Wilbraham is a member. Town Meeting adopts the annual budget, passes town bylaws, and approves major spending. This is direct democracy in its literal sense.
Select Board
3 members elected town-wide. They set policy, sign the warrants that decide what reaches Town Meeting, appoint residents to many town boards, and hire and supervise the Town Administrator.
Town Administrator
The appointed chief administrator. Runs the departments, builds the budget, and answers to the Select Board. Hired under contract, not elected.
School Committee
7 members, elected by the voters of the district the schools serve. It sets school policy, approves the school budget, and hires the Superintendent.
- Residents elect the 3 members of the Select Board and the School Committee.
- The Select Board hires the Town Administrator and decides what goes on the Town Meeting warrant.
- Town Meeting votes the budget and the bylaws, and every registered voter present can vote.
- You take part: register at 16, vote at 18, and once you are registered you are already a member of Town Meeting.
Civic Calendar
- Select Board: 7:00 pm on Mondays, as posted, at the Town Office Building, 240 Springfield Street. The board’s own page says it meets weekly through most of the year, and each agenda goes up in advance.
- Town Meeting: the town bylaws have the Select Board schedule the Annual Town Meeting somewhere between April and June, and recent practice puts it on the Monday before the town election. The 2026 Annual Town Meeting ran on May 11 at Minnechaug Regional High School and took 43 articles in under three hours.
- Town elections: by the town’s own tradition, the third Saturday in May, across four precincts. The 2026 annual town election was held on May 16.
- State and federal elections: even-numbered years. The 2026 primary and general are this fall.

Your County Officials
Two of the people with the most direct power over your life are elected countywide. The district attorney decides who gets charged with a crime, and what they get charged with. The sheriff runs the county jail. Both of them answer to the voters of Hampden County, and that includes Wilbraham. They appear on your ballot. Now you know what to look for.
Every county in Massachusetts elects its own, and the job is the same everywhere: the charging decisions, the jail. Look up any town in the state and see who holds these two offices there.
Your First Civic Action in Wilbraham
You do not have to wait until you can vote to be heard in your own town. Here is how to take a real concern to the people who decide.
- Pick the right body. Town policy, roads, licences and public health go to the Select Board, which is also the Board of Health. Schools go to the regional School Committee. The budget and the bylaws are voted by Town Meeting.
- Find the meeting. The Select Board meets at 7:00 pm on Mondays, as posted, at the Town Office Building, 240 Springfield Street, and the agenda is posted in advance in the town’s Agenda Center.
- Know your members. All three Select Board members are elected town-wide, so every one of them answers to you.
- Speak. Meetings are open to the public and residents may address the board. Check the agenda for how to sign up.
- Or write an article. Ten registered voters can put an article on the Annual Town Meeting warrant, and in 2026 a citizen petition on public shade trees reached the floor that way.
