M. Kate Carbone, Interim Superintendent
M. Kate Carbone has served Salem Public Schools in a variety of leadership roles, most recently as Deputy Superintendent, where she focused on curriculum, instruction, and assessment across the district. She stepped into the role of Interim Superintendent following the departure of Superintendent Stephen Zrike. A permanent superintendent search was conducted through the Collins Center for Public Management at UMass Boston, with community forums held with three finalists on June 15–17, 2026. The School Committee
The Salem School Committee consists of seven elected members plus the Mayor of Salem, who serves as chair. It sets district-wide policy, approves the school budget, and oversees the hiring of the Superintendent.
