Town Government
Northborough School Committee & Superintendent
The Superintendent
Gregory Martineau
About 1,588 students start their day in Northborough’s own five schools, and Gregory Martineau answers for all of them. His title is longer than most, and the reason is worth knowing: he is Superintendent of Northborough and Southborough Public Schools, which means he runs three districts at once. Northborough’s PreK through grade 8 district is one, Southborough’s is another, and the Northborough-Southborough Regional district that operates Algonquin Regional High School is the third. A Northborough student passes from a committee elected only by this town into one elected by two towns together, and the same superintendent proposes the budget on both sides of that line. He is hired by, reports to, and is evaluated by the elected committees.

The School Committee
The Northborough School Committee has five members, all elected by the voters of Northborough to staggered three-year terms, and it holds one chair, one vice chair, one secretary and two members. It sets school policy, reviews and approves the budget for public education, and appoints and evaluates the Superintendent. Two seats were filled at the May 12, 2026 election, when Joan Galla Frank took 1,408 votes and Kristen N. Willems Tietjen 1,379. The committee meets on the first Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Lincoln Street School cafeteria, and the meetings are public, which means a Northborough student who shows up can speak.

The Regional Committee, and Why There Are Two
Algonquin Regional High School belongs to Northborough and Southborough together, so it answers to a second body: the ten member Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee, five elected by each town. Northborough filled its two open regional seats on the same May ballot, returning Erin Tagliaferri with 2,026 votes across both towns and Meagan Sanko with 2,006. That committee meets on the third Wednesday of the month at 6:30 pm in the Algonquin library at 79 Bartlett Street, and Joan G. Frank chairs it. Northborough voters also elect a member of the Assabet Valley Regional Vocational District School Committee, which runs the technical high school in Marlborough.
