About 175 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Robert Liebow is the Superintendent of the Nahant School District, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running the Johnson School day to day. Nahant is one of the smallest school districts in the state, and unusual in shape: it runs a single school for preschool through grade six, and for grades seven through twelve its students continue to schools in neighboring Swampscott under a tuition and choice arrangement, so Nahant has no high school of its own. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected five-member School Committee, which carries out an annual evaluation. Because the district is small, the Superintendent’s decisions land close to home, and a parent or a student who wants to be heard has a short path to the person in charge.

The School Committee
The Nahant School Committee has five members serving staggered three-year terms, all elected town-wide by the voters of Nahant. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent who runs the schools day to day. It meets on a schedule posted on the town calendar, and the meetings are public, which means a Nahant student who shows up can speak.
