About 593 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Brian Ricca leads the Southern Berkshire Regional School District, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running four schools day to day, among them Mount Everett Regional School, the district’s high school in Sheffield. He came on as interim superintendent for the 2025-26 school year and was hired to the permanent job under a three-year contract. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which carries out an annual evaluation. Because the district is regional, that committee answers to five towns at once: Sheffield, Egremont, Alford, Monterey, and New Marlborough all send members and all vote on its budget. Every Monterey student who continues past the town’s early grades attends the regional schools.

The School Committee
The Southern Berkshire Regional School Committee has ten members serving staggered three-year terms, with seats apportioned across the five member towns; Monterey holds one of them, currently Kimberly Alcantara. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent who runs the schools day to day. Its meetings are public, and a Monterey student who shows up can speak. One Egremont seat is currently vacant.
