About 2,863 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Dr. David L. Thomson leads Middleborough Public Schools, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running five schools day to day. He holds the job on an interim basis: the School Committee interviewed four candidates on the evening of June 3, 2026, voted unanimously to appoint him, and he began on July 1. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates the job against goals it publishes and votes on. Note what this means for the money: the school budget is the one large piece of town spending the Town Manager does not build. It comes from the Superintendent to the School Committee, and then to the same Town Meeting that votes everything else.

The School Committee
The Middleborough School Committee has seven members, all elected town-wide to staggered three-year terms. Middleborough is a single-town district, so all seven answer to Middleborough voters and nobody else. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. Charter section 8 leaves it alone on purpose: it says nothing in the 1920 act affects the election, powers and duties of the School Committee, so this is the one elected body in town the Town Manager act does not reach. Four of the seven seats were on the April 2026 ballot at once, three for full terms and one for an unexpired one. Meetings are public, which means a Middleborough student who shows up can speak.

- When: Thursday evenings, usually starting at 6:30pm, in a school auditorium rather than Town Hall. Recent meetings have been at the Middleborough High School Auditorium, 71 East Grove Street, and at the John T. Nichols, Jr. Middle School Auditorium, 112 Tiger Drive. Check the posting for the night you want.
