Lynnfield Boards & Commissions

What Boards & Commissions Are

Beyond the three-member Select Board and the School Committee, most of Lynnfield’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions. They approve new development, hear zoning appeals, protect the wetlands and the open space, look after the town’s historic buildings, and advise Town Meeting on every dollar in the budget. They are the rooms where an ordinary resident can have the most direct hand in a decision, and the town keeps a standing page of current openings.

Most members are appointed by the Select Board and serve fixed terms. The meetings are public, and seats open up regularly.

Key Boards & Commissions

  • Planning Board reviews subdivisions, site plans, and major development, and it also runs the town’s tree bylaw and its revolving fund.
  • Zoning Board of Appeals hears variances and special permits.
  • Conservation Commission protects Lynnfield’s wetlands, ponds, and open space under the state Wetlands Protection Act and the town’s own wetland bylaw.
  • Finance Committee reviews the budget and recommends for or against every money article on the Town Meeting warrant. Its recommendation can change what the Select Board asks for.
  • Board of Health oversees inspections, permits, and public health rules.
  • Historical Commission is a five-member board founded in 1963 and appointed by the Select Board. Under state law it is the town’s official agent for historic preservation, and it looks after the 1714 Meeting House on the Common.

For the full roster, current members, vacancies, and schedules, see the town’s Commissions and Committees page and its Boards page.
