Town Government
Leyden Boards & Commissions
What Boards & Commissions Are
Beyond the Select Board and the School Committee, much of Leyden’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions. They review new building, hear zoning appeals, protect the town’s wetlands and open space, advise Town Meeting on the budget, and guide services for residents. In a town this small they are also where the numbers get personal: a single willing neighbor can fill a seat that shapes a real decision.
Some of these seats are elected on the town ballot and others are appointed by the Select Board. The meetings are public, and seats open up regularly.
Key Boards & Commissions
- Planning Board reviews subdivisions and land use, and is elected on the town ballot to five-year terms.
- Zoning Board of Appeals hears variances and special permits.
- Conservation Commission protects Leyden’s wetlands, streams, and open space.
- Finance Committee reviews the budget and advises Town Meeting on spending.
- Board of Health is elected town-wide and oversees septic, wells, and public health rules.
- Agricultural, Historical, and Building Commissions, plus the Cultural Council and the Open Space and Recreation Committee, round out the town’s volunteer boards.

How to Serve
- Find an opening, whether an elected seat coming up at the Town Caucus and annual election or an appointed vacancy.
- Submit a letter of interest or application to the Select Board office, or take out nomination papers for an elected seat.
- Interview or run, then await appointment by the Select Board or the vote of the town.
- Serve: attend the public meetings and help make decisions for your town.
Serving on a board is one of the most direct ways to shape Leyden.
