The Other Half of a County Seat
A city of 17,768 does not carry a whole county on City Hall alone. Because Greenfield is the only city in Franklin County, a set of regional organizations are headquartered here and serve all 26 communities, which means a Greenfield student lives inside the offices that plan the buses, lend to the small businesses and run the county’s hospital. These are places you can call, volunteer at, or ask for an internship.

| Franklin County Community Development Corporation | Lends to small local businesses and runs the Western Massachusetts Food Processing Center, which is where a lot of the region’s farm-to-shelf products are actually made. |
| Community Action Pioneer Valley | The federally designated Community Action Agency for Franklin and Hampshire counties: Head Start, fuel assistance, family services. |
| Franklin Regional Council of Governments | The regional planning body for the 26 communities of Franklin County, headquartered in Greenfield. |
| Franklin Regional Transit Authority | Runs the county bus network out of the John W. Olver Transit Center downtown. Greenfield holds a seat on its advisory board. |
| Baystate Franklin Medical Center | The county’s hospital, on Main Street in Greenfield. |
| Greenfield Community College | A Massachusetts public community college with its main campus on College Drive. |

| Green River Festival | The annual music festival that brings the largest crowd of the year into Greenfield. |
Who Covers Greenfield
Knowing which outlet covers a meeting is a civic skill of its own, because a reporter in the room is often the only record a resident will read.
- Greenfield Recorder. The city’s daily paper of record. Its reporters are named in the City Council’s own approved minutes, at the organizational meeting in January 2026 and at the capital budget meeting in May 2026.
- Greenfield Community Television. Carries City Council meetings on Channel 9 and School Committee meetings on Channel 15, and streams both.
- NEPM. New England Public Media, the region’s public radio and television service.
- The Montague Reporter. An independent weekly published next door that covers Franklin County towns.
Volunteering on a city board is its own door, and seats open regularly.
