Who Represents Essex
All of Essex sits in a single state representative district and a single state senate district, so one representative and one senator speak for the whole town on Beacon Hill. One member of Congress covers the town, and the Commonwealth’s two U.S. senators represent the entire state, Essex included. Five names on this page, and between them they cover everything from a shellfish bylaw to a federal fisheries rule.

The First Essex and Middlesex district runs along the North Shore and Cape Ann, from Newburyport and Salisbury down through Gloucester, and all of Essex sits inside it, which means there is no district line to check before you write. Bruce Tarr also serves as the Senate Minority Leader, which gives the town’s senator a seat at the table when the chamber’s business is set.
State Representative
All of Essex sits in one House district, the 5th Essex, so a single representative speaks for the whole town. There is no district line to check: the same person answers for every street.

A state representative files bills, votes the state budget, and can chase a state agency on a constituent’s behalf, which is often the fastest use of the office. This office takes calls from Essex residents.
