The Institutions Between You and Town Hall

Some of what a town does for its residents does not run through a department at all. A library board, a chamber of commerce, a hospital in the next city and a volunteer commission each carry part of the load, and each of them is a place where a resident can turn up and be useful without waiting for an election.

Where to Start

East Longmeadow Public Library 60 Center Square. A town department with its own catalog, programs and History Room, supported by a six member Board of Library Trustees and by the Friends of the Library. Katherine McGonigle is the Library Director.
ERC5 Chamber of Commerce The East of the River Five Town Chamber, the business association for East Longmeadow and four neighbouring towns. The town links it from its own Businesses section.
Baystate Medical Center 759 Chestnut Street, Springfield, 413-794-0000. The nearest full service hospital, open 24 hours.

Places the Town Itself Keeps

  • The Historical Museum House. Run by the seven member Historical Commission, which also oversees the History Room at the library and works to preserve and develop the town’s historical assets.
  • Heritage Park. On July 16, 2026 the town buried a time capsule there, to be opened in 2076, and paid tribute to a former chair of the Historical Commission.
  • The rail trail. East Longmeadow keeps its own Rail Trail page, on the former railroad right of way that runs through town.

Local News

  • The Reminder. Reminder Publishing covers East Longmeadow town government week to week, including the town election returns and the Council’s budget votes.
  • WWLP 22News. The Springfield television station, which covers Hampden County including East Longmeadow.
  • MassLive. Regional coverage of western Massachusetts.
  • ELCAT. The town’s own community access television operation records and posts meetings, which means you can watch a Council meeting you could not attend.

Volunteering on a town board is a real job with a real vote, and the application is a short form.
