East Longmeadow Departments

Where the Work Actually Happens

Almost everything the town does for you is done by a department, not by an elected official. Public works, police, fire, health, libraries and the rest report up through the Town Manager, which is why a service problem usually goes to a department first and to an elected official second. Most of them sit at 60 Center Square, and one main line, 413-525-5400, reaches nearly all of them by extension.

The Four Appointments the Council Can Stop

The Town Manager appoints every department head, but four of those names go past the Town Council first. The Police Chief, the Fire Chief, the DPW Superintendent and the Town Clerk take office unless a majority of the Council rejects the Manager’s recommendation by roll call within 45 days of the name being presented, or at the next Council meeting, whichever comes first. Every appointment and promotion in town government is made on merit and fitness demonstrated by examination, past performance, or other evidence of competence.
