School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Paul Vieira

About 1,077 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Paul Vieira has been Superintendent of the Douglas Public Schools since July 1, 2021. He came up through the schools before running them, as a Spanish teacher, then an assistant principal, a high school principal, and an assistant superintendent, and he holds a doctorate in educational leadership from Northeastern University. As Superintendent he proposes the school budget, sets academic priorities, and runs a single town district of four schools day to day. He is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates him each year. Because Douglas runs its own Pre-K to 12 district rather than a regional one, that committee answers to Douglas voters alone.

The School Committee

The Douglas School Committee has five members serving staggered three-year terms, all elected town-wide because Douglas runs its own school district. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent who runs the schools day to day. It meets in Room C208 at Douglas High School, 33 Davis Street, and the meetings are public, which means a Douglas student who shows up can speak.
