Charlemont is a rural hill town of about 27 square miles in the northwest corner of Franklin County. It is an older town than most in the Commonwealth: about two residents in five are 65 or over, and about one in fourteen is under 18. Nearly four in five of its homes are owner-occupied, households average 1.9 people, and fewer than one resident in twenty was born outside the United States. Those registrations turn into a small, decisive electorate. Charlemont’s June 2026 town election drew a 13.6 percent turnout: of 961 registered voters, 131 came to the polls.
