City Government
Brockton City Council
The City Council is where everyday complaints turn into city policy. Brockton’s Council has eleven members: one from each of the seven wards, elected by the neighborhood they live in, plus four at-large members elected by the whole city. They serve two-year terms, and they choose one of their own as president to run the meetings.
- Writes the laws by passing ordinances and resolutions.
- Controls the money by adopting the budget the mayor proposes and setting the tax rate.
- Checks the mayor by approving major appointments and overriding vetoes.
Council Members
Council President John Lally, who represents Ward 6, chairs the Council. The four at-large councillors are elected by all Brockton voters; each of the seven ward councillors represents one part of the city.
