Who Represents Belchertown
Five people speak for Belchertown above the town line, and there is no district boundary inside the town to check first. One state representative and one state senator carry the whole town in the Massachusetts Legislature, one member of Congress carries it in the U.S. House, and the Commonwealth’s two U.S. senators represent the entire state, Belchertown included. Between them they cover everything from a state road repair to a federal grant for your school.
State Senator
Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester District · Democrat
Jake Oliveira
State House: Room 416-B · (617) 722-1291
Email: jacob.oliveira@masenate.gov
A state senator votes the state budget, files bills, and sits on the joint committees where most bills live or die. All of Belchertown sits inside the Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester district, so there is no district line to check before you write. Senator Oliveira chairs the Joint Committee on Labor and Workforce Development, and he was one of the two legislators who filed the bill that created Belchertown’s Town Manager.
State Representative
Belchertown is not split. The entire town sits in the 7th Hampden House district, so one representative answers for every street in it.
7th Hampden District · Democrat
Aaron Saunders
State House: Room 34 · (617) 722-2320
Email: aaron.saunders@mahouse.gov
A state representative files bills, votes the state budget, and can chase a state agency on a constituent’s behalf, which is often the fastest use of the office. Representative Saunders sits on the Joint Committees on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities, on Bonding, Capital Expenditures and State Assets, and on Agriculture and Fisheries. He also filed the petition, by vote of the town, that became Belchertown’s Town Manager Act, which is a useful thing to know: a change to how your own town is organized can start at Town Meeting and finish at the State House.
In Washington
All of Belchertown sits in the First Congressional District, one of nine in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is represented in the U.S. Senate by Elizabeth Warren, the senior senator, and Edward J. Markey, the junior senator, both Democrats, and both of them represent you as much as any Belchertown voter.
