Town Government
Acton School Committee & Superintendent
The Superintendent
Peter Light
About 5,005 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Peter Light is the Superintendent of Schools for Acton-Boxborough, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running nine schools day to day. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates him against goals it publishes and votes on. Note what this means for the money: the school budget is the one large piece of local spending the Town Manager does not build. It comes from the Superintendent to the School Committee, and then to the Town Meetings of two separate towns.

The School Committee
Acton does not run its own school department for grades PreK to 12. Acton and Boxborough run their schools together as one regional district, and that changes who you vote for. The Acton-Boxborough Regional School Committee has eleven members and the two towns elect them separately: seven seats are filled by Acton voters and four by Boxborough voters, all to three year terms. So an Acton resident helps choose a majority of the committee but not the whole of it, and the four Boxborough members have exactly the same vote on your school budget as the seven from your own town.
The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. It publishes its own officers, and it elects a Vice Chairperson from Acton and a Vice Chairperson from Boxborough, so the committee has two. One more piece of arithmetic is worth carrying: because Acton’s seats are filled at Acton’s April election and Boxborough’s at Boxborough’s May election, the committee’s membership can change twice each spring.
