Acton Legislators

Who Represents Acton

Six people speak for Acton above the town line, and one of them depends on your address. Acton is split between two Massachusetts House districts, so before you write to a state representative you need to know which side of the line your street is on. Everything else is town-wide: one state senator carries all of Acton, one member of Congress carries it in the U.S. House, and the Commonwealth’s two U.S. senators represent the whole state, Acton included. Between them they cover everything from a state road repair to a federal grant for your school.

State Senator

A state senator votes the state budget, files bills, and sits on the joint committees where most bills live or die. All of Acton sits inside the Middlesex and Worcester district, alongside eleven other communities including Boxborough, Littleton, Maynard and Stow, so there is no district line to check before you write to him.

State Representatives, and Why There Are Two

Acton is one of the Massachusetts towns cut in half by a House district line. The 14th Middlesex and the 37th Middlesex each take part of the town, which means two different representatives serve Acton and only one of them is yours. Both are worth knowing, because a bill either one files can reach your street, but a constituent letter carries the most weight when it comes from the district the member actually represents.

A state representative files bills, votes the state budget, and can chase a state agency on a constituent’s behalf, which is often the fastest use of the office. Representative Cataldo sits on the Joint Committees on Education, the Judiciary, Financial Services, and Environment and Natural Resources. Representative Sena sits on the Joint Committees on Children, Families and Persons with Disabilities and on Agriculture and Fisheries, and on the House Committees on Climate Action and Sustainability and on Intergovernmental Affairs. Both have worked on early literacy legislation, which is about as close to a student’s own daily life as state law gets.

In Washington

All of Acton sits in the Third Congressional District, one of nine in Massachusetts. Massachusetts is represented in the U.S. Senate by Elizabeth Warren, the senior senator, and Edward J. Markey, the junior senator, both Democrats, and both of them represent you as much as any Acton voter.
