About the Council
In January 2026 it took the City Council three rounds of balloting to choose its own President, the first contested vote for the gavel since 2010. That is the kind of body this is: nine elected neighbors who have to argue their way to a decision. Seven councillors are elected by ward, one from each part of the city, and two are elected at large by every Woburn voter. Councillors serve two-year terms, so voters weigh in on every seat every two years. The Council is where a daily problem becomes city policy: a flooded street, a stalled development, the tax rate on your family’s home.
- Sets policy and law by passing ordinances and resolutions.
- Controls the budget by approving or cutting what the Mayor proposes, and by setting the tax rate.
- Checks the Mayor by confirming major appointments and overriding vetoes with a two-thirds vote.
Council Members
Two councillors are elected at large by every Woburn voter. The other seven each represent a single ward. The Council chooses one of its members as President to run its meetings.

- When: the first and third Tuesdays at 7:00 PM in the Council Chamber, Woburn City Hall, 10 Common Street.
- Agendas & minutes: posted in advance by the City Clerk at woburnma.gov.
- Public comment: residents may address the Council. Check the agenda for the sign-up procedure.
- Watch: meetings are carried on Woburn Public Media and streamed online.
