Winchendon School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Charlotte King

About 1,127 students start their day in this district, and one person answers for all of it. Charlotte King leads Winchendon Public Schools, proposing the school budget, setting academic priorities, and running the district’s six schools day to day from the district office at 175 Grove Street. The Superintendent is hired by and reports to the elected School Committee, which evaluates her against goals it publishes and votes on. Note what this means for the money: the school budget is the one large piece of town spending the Town Manager does not build. It comes from the Superintendent to the School Committee, and then to the same Town Meeting that votes everything else. At the May 18, 2026 Annual Town Meeting that room passed the FY27 school budget 226 to 121.

The School Committee

The Winchendon School Committee has five members, all elected town-wide to staggered three-year terms. Winchendon is a single-town district, so all five answer to Winchendon voters and nobody else. The committee sets district policy, approves the school budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. Its recent history is a lesson in what a handful of ballots can do: at the May 2024 town election nobody’s name was printed on the ballot for the two open three-year seats, and Mike Barbaro and David Iannacone won them on write-in votes, 47 and 35. Barbaro now chairs the committee. A few dozen neighbors writing a name by hand seated the people who oversee the schools.

Curious how a bill becomes law, or how students can take on a civics project?
