Weymouth Town Council

About the Council

In November 2025, Weymouth voters unseated a sitting district councilor and sent new faces to the at-large seats. That is the power this body answers to. The Council has eleven members: six elected by district, one from each part of town, and five elected at large by every voter. Councilors serve two-year terms, so voters weigh in on every seat every two years. The Council is where a daily problem becomes town policy: a flooded street that needs fixing, a stalled development, the tax rate on your family’s home.

  • Sets policy and law by passing ordinances and resolutions.
  • Controls the budget by approving or cutting what the Mayor proposes.
  • Checks the Mayor by acting on major proposals and overriding vetoes with a two-thirds vote.

Council Members

Five councilors are elected at large by every Weymouth voter. The other six each represent a single district. The Council chooses one of its members as President to run its meetings. Arthur Mathews serves as President and Fred Happel as Vice President.

What this seat decides

Your Town or City Council

A local ordinance, the city or town budget, or a problem in your own ward or district. The real testimony happens at committee hearings rather than at the full council meeting.

Public hearings and meetings are where residents shape town decisions.
