Wales School Committee & Superintendent

The Superintendent

Deborah J. Boyd

About 107 students start their day at Wales Elementary, and the person who answers for their schooling also answers to three other towns. Deborah J. Boyd is Superintendent of the Tantasqua Regional and School Union 61 Districts, the shared system that serves Wales, Brimfield, Holland, and Sturbridge. Wales Elementary is its own district with its own elected School Committee, and when students reach grade seven they cross into the Tantasqua Regional schools in Sturbridge. The Superintendent proposes the school budgets, sets academic priorities, and is hired by and reports to the elected committees, which carry out an annual evaluation.

The School Committee

The Wales Elementary School Committee has five members elected town-wide by Wales voters, and it sets policy for the town’s own school, approves its budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent together with the other Union 61 committees. Wales voters also fill the town’s seat on the Tantasqua Regional School Committee, which governs the junior high and high school; Michael Valanzola holds it. Christine Randall chairs the elementary committee.
