Sutton Boards & Commissions

What Boards & Commissions Are

Beyond the Select Board and the School Committee, much of Sutton’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions. They approve new development, hear zoning appeals, protect the town’s wetlands and open space, weigh in on historic places, and guide services for residents. They are the rooms where an ordinary resident can have the most direct hand in a decision.

Who fills these seats is a real question here, and Sutton’s charter answers it. Six kinds of office are not appointed at all: under Article 3 the voters directly elect the Select Board, the School Committee, the Planning Board, the Board of Library Trustees, the Town Moderator and the Housing Authority. Many other bodies are appointed, some by the Select Board and some by the Town Manager under section 4-2. One appointment is worth singling out: the Finance and Warrant Advisory Committee, which reviews every article before Town Meeting votes it, is appointed by the elected Town Moderator, the same officer who runs the meeting.

Key Boards & Commissions

  • Planning Board reviews subdivisions, site plans, and major development. Elected under the charter.
  • Zoning Board of Appeals hears variances and special permits. Appointed.
  • Conservation Commission protects Sutton’s wetlands, rivers, and open space. Appointed.
  • Finance and Warrant Advisory Committee reviews every warrant article, holds a public hearing, and reports a recommendation to Town Meeting on each one. Appointed by the Town Moderator.
  • Board of Health oversees inspections, permits, and public health rules. Elected under the charter.
  • Board of Library Trustees oversees the town’s public library. Elected under the charter, so this is a board you can run for.
  • Housing Authority runs the town’s public housing. Its members are elected under the charter.

How to Serve

  1. Find an opening on the town’s boards and committees page.
  2. Submit a letter of interest or application to the Select Board office. The board advertises its openings on the town website and on social media, and it takes applications up to a stated meeting date.
  3. Interview if asked, and await appointment.
  4. Serve: attend the public meetings and help make decisions for your town.

You do not have to wait until you turn eighteen to do this. Many of Sutton’s boards and committees seat residents who apply, and the volunteer bodies are where an ordinary resident has the most direct hand in a decision. Watch the town website for openings and put your name in.

Serving on a board is one of the most direct ways to shape Sutton.
