What Boards & Commissions Are
Beyond the Selectboard and the School Committee, South Hadley lists close to thirty standing boards and committees, and most of the people on them are your neighbors serving as volunteers. They approve new development, hear zoning appeals, protect the wetlands and the brooks that run down to the Connecticut River, advise Town Meeting on every dollar in the budget, and decide where the town’s cultural grant money goes. These are the rooms where an ordinary resident has the most direct hand in a decision.
Most members are appointed by the Selectboard and serve fixed terms. The Appropriations Committee is the deliberate exception: the Selectboard does not appoint it, because the committee that reviews the Administrator’s budget should not be chosen by the board that hires the Administrator. Meetings are public, agendas must be posted at least 48 hours ahead on the town’s Agenda Center, and seats open up regularly.
Key Boards & Commissions
- Appropriations Committee reviews the budget and reports to Town Meeting on what the town should spend.
- Capital Planning Committee works out which buildings, vehicles and big repairs the town takes on, and in what order.
- Planning Board reviews subdivisions, site plans and major development.
- Zoning Board of Appeals hears variances and special permits.
- Conservation Commission protects the town’s wetlands, brooks and open space under the state Wetlands Protection Act.
- Board of Health oversees inspections, clinics and public health rules.
- Human Rights Commission and the Commission on Disabilities work on equal treatment and access across the town.
- Sustainability and Energy Commission and the Tree Committee take on the town’s energy use and its canopy.
- Historical Commission and the Trustees of the Old Firehouse Museum look after what the town keeps of its own past.

How to Serve

- Apply through the town’s own application for appointment, which is an online form.
- Interview if asked, and await appointment by the Selectboard.
- Serve: attend the public meetings and help make decisions for your town. The Selectboard publishes a board and committee guide that explains what members are asked to do.
Serving on a board is one of the most direct ways to shape South Hadley.
