What Boards & Commissions Are
Beyond the Select Board and the School Committee, much of Savoy’s governing happens on volunteer boards and commissions. They review new development, hear zoning appeals, protect wetlands and open space, weigh in on historic places, and guide services for residents. In a town with no appointed administrator, these rooms are where an ordinary resident can have a real hand in a decision.
Some boards are appointed by the Select Board, permanent and ad hoc. Others are elected on the town ballot: the May 2026 election filled seats on the Board of Assessors, the Planning Board, the Cemetery Commission, and the Park Commission, along with the Moderator and a Constable. In Savoy you can be appointed to some of these seats, and you can simply run for the others.
Key Boards & Commissions
- Planning Board reviews subdivisions, site plans, and major development. Elected.
- Board of Assessors sets property values and hears abatements. Elected; chaired by Julie Pavia.
- Conservation Commission protects Savoy’s wetlands, streams, and open space. Members include April LeSage, Cosmo LaViola, and Chloe Martel.
- Finance Committee reviews the budget line by line and advises Town Meeting on spending.
- Capital Improvement Committee plans the town’s larger purchases and building projects over several years.
- Cemetery Commission oversees the town’s cemeteries. Elected.
- Parks & Recreation Committee looks after the town’s fields, recreation land, and events.
- Deerfield River and Westfield River Wild and Scenic Committees represent Savoy in the protection of its two river watersheds.
- Safety Committee reviews conditions and practices that affect public safety in town.

How to Serve
- Find an opening by watching the town’s News & Notices and the Volunteer Opportunities listing, or watch the ballot for elected seats.
- Ask the Select Board office how to apply, at (413) 743-4290 x1001 or sbadmin@townofsavoy.com.
- Interview if asked, and await appointment by the Select Board, or take out nomination papers with the Town Clerk and run.
- Serve: attend the public meetings and help make decisions for your town.
Serving on a board is one of the most direct ways to shape Savoy.
