A town of twelve thousand people cannot fund everything through a tax rate, and Palmer does not try to. An all-volunteer arts center in Three Rivers, an adult education nonprofit that teaches English and computer skills, a school-to-career partnership serving seven districts, and a library with its own railroad archive do work the town budget does not reach. Every one of them takes volunteers, and most of them will take a sixteen year old.

Local News
Palmer’s community newspaper is the Journal Register, which also serves Monson, Brimfield, Holland and Wales. It is published by Turley Publications, a family owned company in business since 1962, and it takes submissions and story ideas from residents. Phone 413-283-8393.
Reading the paper is not a small civic act in a town this size. A council seat here can be decided by five votes, and the paper is often the only place a candidate’s name appears before the ballot does.
Where to Find Help
The town keeps a Community Resource Guide covering affordable housing, food and cash assistance, health care, job searches, home counseling agencies and transportation. Two transport services worth knowing by name: the Pioneer Valley Transit Authority and the Quaboag Connector, plus a Palmer Rides to Work program on which veterans ride at no charge to the rider.
