Colleen Mucha
The person who answers for Oakham’s public schools answers to five towns at once. Colleen Mucha is Superintendent of the Quabbin Regional School District, the shared system that serves Oakham along with Barre, Hardwick, Hubbardston, and New Braintree from a district office on South Street in Barre. Oakham does not run a school district of its own: its students attend the district’s elementary, middle, and high schools, and the town elects its own representatives to the regional School Committee that governs them. The Superintendent proposes the budget, sets academic priorities, and is hired by and reports to the elected committee, which carries out an annual evaluation.

The School Committee
The Quabbin Regional School Committee is elected by the voters of the five member towns, and it sets policy for the regional schools, approves the district budget, and hires and evaluates the Superintendent. Oakham fills its own seats on the committee: Maribel LaRange and Walther H. Nutter hold them, and Nutter was elected to a three-year term at the May 18, 2026 town election with 320 votes. The committee chooses its own officers, and as the district posts them the Chair is Mark Brophy of Barre and the Vice Chair is Debra Chamberlain.

- The budget: the district budget still lands at Town Meeting, where every registered voter can vote on it.
